Byrd Going Electric

A car showroom photographed like a scene found in the street.

Commission

Byrd is now a leading name in the sale of used electric vehicles in Portugal. The commission was to make a series in one of its showrooms, working only from the reality of the place: its setting, the cars available on site, and the weather of the day with the natural light it imposed. The photographs are now permanently exhibited there.

Coming from street photography, I approached this work as I approach any real scene: composing with what is already there, without altering the place or staging it for the image. The room’s imperfections were not erased; they are part of what these pictures tell. Here, the cars are not turned into weightless objects of prestige. They stay within the space where they are shown and sold, bound for the everyday lives of those who will choose them.

The whole point of the commission lay precisely in that constraint: composing the image without intervening in the scene.
